Important Notice: Mumble server will be updated on 1st January 2010, this means you'll need Mumble 1.2.0 to log in on Mumble!

I'm sorry for the short notice, but I too got a little surprised. Today our Mumble provider will be updating their servers to Mumble 1.2.0. Unfortunately this version is incompatible with older versions, so you'll need to update (don't worry, the new version has a protocol negotiation that should prevent any of these issues in the future, no matter how much things change). Version 1.2.0 can be downloaded here. There are no changes to the server settings, so when you've updated you should be able to connect straight away. There are a couple of modifications 'under the hood' though. First of all there's a new audio codec in use, to make full use of it, go to your audio settings and slide the Quality slider to 40kb/s. Second major change is the use of certificates for identification. This means you can register your own username on the server and the server will recognize you by your certificate. Using these certificates you can also create friends lists and whisper to certain people. You're not required to use them though, you'll just be asked for the server password if you're not registered and recognized, like before.

Well, it always worked that way, it's just that the difference between lowest and highest setting is a lot more now and that somehow the default setting ended up on the left (low-quality side) for me.

Aye, I knew the quality was balanced out depending on each individual user's settings. Weird that it defaults to the lowest. Really, the only reason you wouldn't want to have it set to maximum quality, is if you are often experiencing serious network issues or something. Otherwise everyone should be fine with a voice chat program and an online game client running at the same time (plus browser windows in the background).

A slightly important update: contrary to my and Teolwyn's previous statement I now believe, based on the experiences in the past few days and some googling, that it is not a good idea to set the quality slider to full quality, unless you've got a very solid internet connection. The current maximum quality generates 120 kb/s of data, which is a lot of data and seems to cause trouble with a couple of people. Instead I'd advice you to set it somewhere in the 40 kb/s to 60 kb/s region, which is only slightly higher than what we used before.

Additionally a tip for those who sometimes need to restart Mumble: You can now bind a key to the 'Reset Audio processor' function, which should have more or less the same effect.
